SOLD ! San Francisco was a much different place during the gold rush era. Armed gangs roamed the streets with impunity, police and political officials were deeply corrupt. The city eventually formed citizen based vigilance committees to deal with the rampant crime and violence. Personal protection was a very serious issue- from this time period is this original Henry Derigner percussion pistol offered here. Made in Philadelphia sold through the N Curry & Brother agency in San Francisco. These "pocket" size pistols were so popular that they were copied almost universally to the point of slight name changes to avoid any type of royalty payment, they were even the subject of one of the first lawsuits in America.To this day any pocket size pistol is called a Derringer. Their poplulatiry declined when self contained cartridges made them obsolete almost overnight.Total production of these pistols is fairly small approx 3,500 units made in total. Mechanically strong, the hammer cocks with very crisp detents. Caliber is either .41 or .44, if you would like a specific measurement let me know, Silver blade front and notch rear sights, with zig-zag engraving and double silver nickel silver bands around the breech, "DERINGER/PHILADELA'' on top and "N.CURRY & Bro SAN FRANCo CALa - AGENTS" on the barrel. Scroll engraved tang, hammer and lock. German silver accent pates, escutcheons, teardrop buttplate and tip, trigger guard is scroll engraved and features pineapple finial and long tang. The grip is inlayed with silver shield, that two hairlines in the stock radiate out from. The wood is very sound no inscription shield, checkering is slightly worn.Silver gray patina to barrel.
